Toyota’s GR Yaris Just Got Even Sharper... And It’s Not About More Power!
Toyota is pushing the boundaries of its acclaimed GR Yaris by introducing a prototype aero package designed to enhance the car’s performance.
The standout feature of this prototype is a manually adjustable rear wing, engineered to increase downforce and improve stability at high speeds. Complementing this, the redesigned bonnet incorporates a prominent inlet to enhance cooling for the 1.6-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine. Additional air intakes are strategically positioned behind the front wheel arches and along the lower section of the rear diffuser, optimizing airflow and thermal management.
Inside, the prototype features a vertical handbrake, a nod to rally enthusiasts seeking precise control for dynamic driving maneuvers.
While the engine’s power output remains at 276bhp with 288lb ft of torque, these aerodynamic enhancements aim to improve cornering performance rather than straight-line speed.
In parallel developments, Toyota is testing a new 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine in its ‘M Concept’ vehicle, signaling potential future powertrain upgrades for the GR Yaris. Additionally, the company is refining a Direct Automatic Transmission system, promising quicker downshifts compared to existing six-speed manual and eight-speed automatic options.
These initiatives underscore Toyota’s commitment to advancing the GR Yaris’s capabilities, ensuring it remains a formidable presence in the high-performance hatchback segment.
